Mosses are green multicellular plants containing the photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll. They produce sugars from carbon dioxide and water, using solar energy. Oxygen is a byproduct. Mosses are extremely tough and able to withstand prolonged freezing and drought. With lichens, they are often the first living things to colonise bare rock substrates and do not require soil. Liverworts are generally simpler and require damp places. Collectively, Mosses and Liverworts are classed as Bryophytes (Bryophyta). Redmire is not particularly rich in species of these plants.
