Tortula muralis
Wall screw moss
Tortula muralis, Wall Screw Moss, is a common moss around the village of Redmire. It is typically found growing on sandstone such as window sills and walls as neat cushions. During dry conditions the leaves spiral together, making the long, white hair points more prominant, giving a silvery appearance. This is a mechanism for coping with drought. Tortula murails often grows with Grimmia pulvinata which has a similar leaf spiralling mechanism.
