Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus

Springy turf moss

Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus, Springy Turf Moss, thrives on disturbed ground and together with the moss Pleurozium scheberi, the lichen Cladonia rangiformis and the grass Festuca ovina, Sheep's Fescue, makes up a large proportion of ground cover on Cobscar Rake. All four species are tolerant of lead and other heavy metals and benefit from low competition from more vigorous species in this difficult environment. Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus is also a dominant moss on old lawns. Click here for mining page.
