Grimmia pulvinata
Grey cushioned grimmia
Grimmia pulvinata, Grey Cushioned Grimmia, is a common moss around the village of Redmire. It is typically found growing on sandstone such as window sills and walls as neat cushions. During dry conditions the leaves spiral together, making the long, white hair points more prominant, giving a silvery appearance. This is a mechanism for coping with drought. Grimmia pulvinata often grows with Tortula muralis which has a similar leaf spiralling mechanism
