Fungi are regarded as belonging to their own kingdom, being distinct from plants and animals. They are an essential part of the ecosystem. Most plants rely on mycorrhizal fungi to assist uptake of nurients by their roots. Fungi are vital for decomposition and the recycling of organic materials, including wood, which is particularly hard to digest. The bulk of fungi work unnoticed in the ground, or some other substrate, as threads called hyphae. It is only the fruiting bodies that draw attention above ground. Some fungi are parasitic and many form symbiotic partnerships with algae and cyanobacteria, as lichens. Lichens are illustrated in their own section.
