Vertebrates are probably the most familiar animals, although far less numerous than invertebrates. They range widely in habitat including gardens, water, woodland and moorland. The main groups are fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The principal feature of a vertebrate is the internal skeleton, composed of bone in most cases.
