Typical habitats for native broad leaved trees and shrubs in the Redmire area are woodland, sides of streams and rivers, and hedgerows. Plantations are largely non-native coniferous trees, although there has been a recent increase in broadleaf tree planting. Hedgerows are often in a poor state due to maintenance being carried out by flail cutting rather than hedge laying. Even so, hedges provide a habitat and food source for a range of plants, insects and birds. Some cause modifications to the tree such as gall forming insects. Some tree species have recently been subject to epidemics, particularly Dutch Elm Disease and Ash Dieback.
