Bees, wasps and ants belong to an order of insects called the Hymenoptera. They include all social insects found in the UK, but many are not social. Females possess a structure that either functions as an ovipositor (egg laying structure), or it may be modified as a sting. Some Hymenoptera have parasitic larvae, feeding within other insects or plants, causing plant galls. Oak apples are a familiar example.
