All surface rocks in Redmire Civil Parish originated in the Carboniferous Period, between 359 to 299 million years ago, in tropical conditions. They range from Millstone Grit at the highest levels to a mix of limestones, sandstones and shales at lower levels. Most contain fossils, primarily of tropical marine animals, but also plants from river deltas. The fossils are generally small, requiring a hand lens to see much detail. For more details of the general geology, look for GEOLOGY under the HABITAT menu. The Carboniferous Period link on this page gives representations of life at the time.
