Bryozoans

Redmire Pastures

Bryozoans are invertebrate, filter feeding animals, living in static colonies. Most are marine, but a few are freshwater, and some species still persist today. They are especially numerous as fossils in Carboniferous limestone, often as net-like structures. Those in Redmire lived in a shallow tropical sea, where the limestone was deposited. The examples shown here are from the Middle Limestone on the Redmire Pastures road. Most of the fossils are just a few millimetres in size.
