Ferns are green non-flowering plants that reproduce by spores. They are more complex than mosses, having water conducting tissues in the form of a vascular system. In evolutionary terms they pre-date flowering plants. Fern leaves are called fronds. On the underside of a frond are circular structures called sori. These house the spore producing sporangia. Spores develop within the sporangia. I have included other simple plants in this section, although they are not classified as ferns.
