Insects generally have two pairs of wings. The hind wing pair of the Diptera are reduced to small structures called halteres, with propulsion being accomplished with the large fore wings, hence the name "two winged flies". The halteres, serve as gyroscopic structures, aiding balance and enabling the highly efficient flight of these insects.
