Aphid on Cardamine hirsuta

Aphids are a large group of sap feeding insects, many of which have life cycles involving two species of plant hosts. The Aphid on this page was found on Cardamine hirsuta, Hairy Bitter-cress. Most reproduction is by parthenogenesis with males usually present during the autumn only, leading to egg production for overwintering. During the spring and summer, female only populations produce unfertilised live young in large quantities.
